The Many Beauties of ChinaOne Yuan 1960
One of the intriquing and fascinating aspects of paper money in the People's Republic of China is after the communist government secured it's position in all of China in 1949 women began appearing on paper money - perhaps in the interests of equality. On this 1 Yuan note released first in 1960 and used up until 1980 a young lady drives a tractor. A recent issue of the IBNS Journal had a story about the 1 Yuan note with the lady on the tractor, in this case at least, it was based on a photo of her on a tractor. Evidently the lady (Liang Jun) was China's first female tractor driver. She was trained in 1948 at a school sanctioned by the Communist Party and wound up working most of her life with agricultural machinery. She retired in 1990 and is now 80 years old. 2 Jiao 1980
One of my favourite series of paper money ever issued in China was the "Nationalities" issue from 1980-1996. Whilst many westerners think of China as a fairly homogenous population of "Chinese", actually there are many dozens of ethnic groups that make up the population of the most populous nation on earth. Many so called "minorities" number in the millions in China, they each have their own culture, many their own language etc. This series featured many lovely ladies in depicting the nationalities of this great land. Here on the 2 Jiao note are represented Pu Yi and Korean groups. This note is P882. 5 Jiao 1980
The 5 Jiao note features Miao and Zhuang girls as the vignette. This note is P883. 1 Yuan 1996
The 1 Yuan note features teenage Dong and Yao girls, the original note had an engraved reverse, replaced by this lithographed reverse in 1996. This note is P884c 2 Yuan 1980
This 2 Yuan note features young Hyger and Ye Yien ladies on the vignette of the note, this note was issued in 1990. It is P885b. |
