Lovely Colonial Notes From Cape Verde20$00 1958
The Cape Verde Islands are approximately 400 miles west of Senegal in Western Africa. They were claimed for Portugal in 1460, and would remain a Portuguese possession for over 500 years until the new Portuguese Republic recognised their independence in 1975. This particular note design dates to 1958, but the vignette on the reverse actually predates the issue of this note, dating back to Portuguese colonial issues as early as 1914, and was used on many banknotes in Portugal's far flung colonial possessions around the world. The vignette is more emblematic of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino National Overseas Bank than any other particular area. This note is P-47. 100$00 1958
These notes from this colony are actually quite rare, especially so in this grade of crisp uncirculated. This particular note is P-49. This note series was printed by Bradbury Wilkinson in England. |
