A Camerounian Lady in Traditional Attire500 Francs 1983
One of the attractions of banknotes from Africa are colourful and meaningful designs, coupled with much symbolism. In Africa most of the banknotes with women or girls are allegorical, being representative of an ethnic group etc. Cameroun is a country in West Africa that was formerly a French colony, merged with a small British colony and attaining independence in 1960-1961. It is a country that is relatively stable in terms of African politics. This banknote is unusual in that whilst it was issued in Cameroun, with the name of the country, it is in fact a part of the Central African Currency board, known as the Franc CFA for Colonies Francaise d'Afrique and it's currency is interexchangable with other countries in the Central African CFA. Curiously to westerners, this note is bilingual, English is a strong second language in Cameroun, a legacy of the small British controlled colony that united with the former French colony to form the United Republic of Cameroun. |
