Austro-Hungarian Lovelies On a Bukovinian Note

100 Korona

100 Korona 1919

100 Korona 1919

The region of Europe that is referred to as Bukovina is in one of those still hotly contested parts of the continent. With the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire beginning in 1918 several regions really did not fit into one nation or another, and were disputed. Bukovina was and still is one of those places with mixed ethnicities that really had no clear majorities for the Russian, Ukrainian, German, and Romanian residents. At first this area was occupied by Romania and Romanian authorities validated this Austro-Hungarian banknote for use in their occupation area. Shortly thereafter the Ukrainian National Republic claimed and occupied the northern portion of the region. Then when Ukraine was overrun by the Russians once more and made a part of the USSR, their portion was made a part of the Ukrainian SSR. During WWII this area saw more border exchanges and movements of people back and forth. As it is, now Bukovina is roughly split betwixt Romania and Ukraine, therefore, it is deserving of it's own designation - my Romanian friends will say it belongs to Romania, while my Ukrainian friends counter that Bukovina is part of Ukraine - so herein I choose a third path.
